How does thermography work?

All materials with a temperature above −275 °C (i.e. absolute 0 K) emit electromagnetic energy. Thermal imaging cameras convert this emitted electromagnetic energy — one form of which is infrared (IR) radiation — into a visual image. This allows the infrared radiation emitted by materials to be displayed as a thermal image, enabling temperature differences to be analysed.

Unlike conventional cameras, thermal imaging cameras detect infrared waves rather than visible light.
